Southern samplers are not only much rarer than ones from the northeast, but the hot humid summers in the south are a harsh climate for linens and a wonderful living set-up for bugs. Condition is a huge issue if you are even lucky enought to find one of these rare surviours.
Elizabeth Keenan's work Kentucky 1825

Samplermaker Elizabeth Susan Keenan
was born 1818 into a prominent Breckenridge Kentucky family. The sampler
was passed down through a line of descendents from her husband's line,
The Chambliss family; and they originally attributed her needlework skill
at an early age to the fact that her father, Patrick had been a schoolmaster, and
ran a school in Maryland before migrating to Kentucky in 1817 and became a
successful tobacco farmer there.
Elizabeth ex-schoolmaster father, Patrick Keenan, married Cassandra Burch
on Jan. 1, 1808 in Prince Georges Maryland where Cassandra was born in 1785.
Patrick Keenan, the partiarch of this important Kentucky family, originally migrated from
Ireland in 1804 with brothers to escape religious prosecution. When he left
Maryland he migrated to Ohio County, Kentucky and then settled at the site
of the family homestead near "Falls of Rough". His log home and surrounding area
became part of Breckenridge county, Kentucky samplermaker Elizabeth married
Solomon Chambliss in 1842 when she was 25 years of age. By the time of the 1850
census they were still living in Breckenridge, Kentucky, but by 1854 they had settled
in Clay county, Illinois where daughter Sarah Isabelle Chambliss was born on Sept. 20, 1854.
